Many commentators have interpreted this motet from Byrd’s 1589 publication as a message for recusant Roman Catholic communities, reminding them to worship in secret and not to be caught by the authorities (Watch therefore, for you do not know when the Lord will come). A musical flourish is given to final iterations of the word vigilate. The 2nd Tenor may be sung by a mixture of Tenors and Baritones if desired.
