Byrd often chose to set Latin texts that speak of the desolation of Jerusalem, interpreted today as a cry of grief for the persecution of Roman Catholics in England in the late 16th century. In this expressive motet from his 1589 collection, he draws particular attention to the word desolata with a striking harmonic progression.
