This large-scale motet published in 1575 is described by Byrd Scholar Joseph Kerman as “the most ambitious composition written by William Byrd in his early years”. Structurally it pays homage to earlier English composers such as Sheppard and Tallis and the piece’s 3 grand sections feature sonorous 6-part writing as well as playful duets and trios. Trinitarian themes can be seen in the anonymous text, though it is not linked to any particular liturgical or seasonal function.
