If the 18th century musical antiquarian John Alcock is to be believed, this piece is Byrd’s response to Philippe de Monte’s Super flumina Babylonis, a setting of the opening verses of the same Psalm sent to him in 1583 by the Flemish composer. The two pieces are found side by side in the three sources used to make this edition.
