This short work was never published in Byrd’s lifetime. Instead, it circulated in various manuscripts and individual partbooks, including the incomplete Baldwin Partbooks. Fortunately John Baldwin also made a later copy of the piece in his “Commonplace Book” and so the work can easily be reconstructed. It sets a Passiontide Responsory from the Sarum Rite (long abolished by the time Byrd probably composed this piece) and, unusually, the Cantus Firmus migrates between the Tenor and Superius.
