This setting of verses from Psalm 13 is probably an early work and clearly shows the influence of Tallis and other earlier English masters on Byrd (the similarity with Tallis’s O sacrum convivium/I call and cry is particularly striking). It circulated widely in a variety of sources in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, suggesting it was a popular piece in Byrd’s lifetime.
