This piece is based upon a Cantus Firmus from the Sarum Rite. Before the abolition of that liturgy during the reign of Elizabeth I, a plainchant verse would have been sung before repeating ut eruas nos… to create the full responsory. This piece was published in Byrd’s 1591 collection, long after Sarum’s abolition, but the chant verse has been included here for reference and need not be sung.
