A setting of verses from the Stabat mater sequence. Setting only part of this lengthy text allows Lusitano more room for expression than other settings (Palestrina’s later Stabat mater sets the whole text but is predominantly homophonic): He weaves incredibly long and drawn-out vocal lines which capture the sorrow of Mary weeping at the foot of her son’s Cross.
