Victoria composed several settings of Psalms for Double choir and this piece has proved one of his most popular. Victoria uses a bright major-sounding mode, though we should be mindful that, to Renaissance ears, this would have had connotations of “hardness” rather than “happiness”, thus making it appropriate for such a sad Psalm text.
