Victoria wrote two settings of the Ave regina caelorum antiphon – one for 5 voices and one for 8 voices in double choir – and in this concise parody Mass, he incorporates material from both of his settings. The Mass was published in 1600 and is typical of late Victoria, featuring clear syllabic delivery of the text in the Gloria and Credo whilst indulging in more expansive polyphony in other movements such as the Christe and Benedictus.
