Victoria wrote two settings of the Alma redemptoris mater antiphon – one for 5 voices and one for 8 voices in double choir – and in this concise parody Mass, he incorporates material from both of his settings. The Gloria and Credo employ direct homophonic writing whilst the remaining movements feature more luxurious polyphony – the dense 8-part texture makes for a particularly lush sound world.
