This large-scale Marian antiphon is one of Tallis’s earliest surviving works, composed during the reign of Henry VIII. It marks the moment Tallis reached compositional maturity and follows the typical English pre-Reformation pattern of alternating duets and trios with sonorous tutti sections. The cadences of the tutti sections are particularly thrilling. Tallis later used this piece as the basis for his Missa Salve intemerata.
