Tallis’s shortest Mass probably dates from the end of the reign of Henry VIII. The writing is sometimes austere – prioritising clarity of text – but still achieves a sense of beauty in its simplicity and is a great demonstration of Tallis’s ability to excel in whatever style he was required to compose in by the religious authorities of the day.
