This fine motet draws together verses from several different Psalms in a unique combination, suggesting a piece of personal devotion for Crecquillon’s employer – Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. To modern listeners the bright major mode might seem inappropriate for the mood of the text but in the 16th century, such a mode was considered to have a “hard” quality, rather than the “happy” association today. Similarly, minor sonorities were thought of as “soft” and this is reflected in the modern German words for major and minor – dur and moll, taken from the Latin durus (hard) and mollis (soft).
