Three books of Vivanco’s music were published in his lifetime. His first publication was a Book of Magnificats from 1607 containing 18 settings and is counted among some the finest Iberian polyphony of the Renaissance era. Vivanco frequently provides two alternate settings of the same verse to be used as desired. In this setting on the 4th tone, Vivanco writes two possible Gloria Patri verses. Both versions are included here, with the second 8-voice setting preferred in this edition. Here Vivanco simultaneously combines paraphrases of three Marian chants (Ave maris stella, O gloriosa Domina and Ave Maria), a paraphrase of the 4th tone and all eight plainsong formulas for the words Anima mea Dominum in numerical order – a stunning piece of contrapuntal dexterity! The first setting for four voices is found in the Appendix and may be used as an alternative.
