Several of Rogier’s surviving motets are settings of Psalm texts and this two-part example is filled with expressive gestures: just as the Psalmist asks for guidance in the ways of God, the music opens with scalic patterns before a more playful and meandering point is introduced on the word dirige. Furthermore, “for you are the God of my salvation” is set using rising chromatic harmony and the final plea for mercy employs direct homophonic writing.
