This short Mass is based on a Cantus Firmus formed from the solmisation of the vowels in Philippus secundus Rex Hispaniae – Mi, mi, ut, re, ut, ut, re, mi, fa, mi, re. It appears exclusively in the Tenor (with allusions in other voice parts) in varying note lengths and even retrograde and the result is a brilliantly quirky tribute to Rogier’s employer from 1586 until his death in 1596 (Philip II himself died in 1598).

NB The text of the Mass Ordianry has been added to the Tenor by the editor but, preferably, the original Philippus secundus… text should be sung.
