The publication of Morales’s Magnificats in 1542 confirmed his reputation as one of the finest composers of his day. Initially they appeared as eight though-composed settings, conforming to the Sistine Chapel Choir’s unique practice of singing the entire piece polyphonically. However, this edition is based on the 1545 and 1562 prints which cater for the more widespread practice of treating the Magnificat as an alternatim composition.
