Alongside the seven Mass settings in his 1625 publication, Cardoso also included two antiphons, a Responsory for the Office of the Dead and two motets – Non mortui qui sunt in inferno and Sitivit anima mea. Both may have been intended as funeral motets, though in Sitivit anima mea contemporary Portuguese listeners may have seen a link between the Psalmist’s desire to see the face of God and their own wish to see a Portuguese ruler as their King (Portugal was ruled by the Spanish Hapsburgs at the time of publication).
