Cardoso published two settings of Requiem Mass during his lifetime. This six-voice setting is taken from his first Book of Masses (Lisbon, 1625) and displays many features typical of Renaissance Requiem settings, most obviously the paraphrase of the chant (often heard in the highest voice here). However, Cardoso’s characteristically “spicy” harmonic language is present throughout, resulting in some daring harmonic progressions underneath the chant.
