Spanish composers had a clear affinity with this Marian antiphon and often reserved some of their most expressive writing for this text. The alteration of the Dorian mode with several accidentals gives this setting a distinctly “Spanish” character and Esquivel introduces an additional Superius voice to create and bright shining texture.
