A parody of Guerrero’s motet Quasi cedrus, a text drawn together from Ecclesiasticus and the Song of Songs often associated with the Feast of the Assumption (15th August). Esquivel follows an emerging Spanish convention of the 17th century by omitting polyphonic settings of the Osanna and Benedictus. In Esquivel’s day, a devotional motet may have been sung at this point but to suit modern liturgical performance, plainchant settings of the missing texts have been inserted by the editor. An additional Altus voice is added in canon in the final Agnus Dei.
