Iberian funeral rites in the Renaissance era were celebrated particularly lavishly and so it is no surprise that several settings of the Missa pro defunctis by Spanish and Portuguese composers survive. This setting by Esquivel, published in 1608, is unusual in that the twin Superius parts offer a brighter texture than other contemporary settings (the double Superius in Victoria’s famous setting a6 is balanced by a split Tenor, whilst Duarte Lobo doubles the Altus and Tenor in his 6-voice setting for a thicker and darker texture). The two Superius parts have been reversed in this edition to reflect their respective ranges and tessiture more accurately.

Esquivel’s funeral motet In paradisum follows this Mass in the 1608 print and is available here.

Esquivel’s later Officium Defunctorum (1613) is available here.
