This attractive Mass is a paraphrase of plainchant antiphon at Vespers for the feasts of Apostles and Evangelists outside of paschal time. The antiphon often appears as a Cantus Firmus and sets Jesus’s words to his disciples – “This is my commandment: that you love one another, as I have loved you”. Although such archaic techniques are common in late Iberian polyphony, Clive Walkley suggests that the appearance of such a text could be a thinly-veiled reprimand to the chapter of Ciudad Rodrigo to cease their infighting and petty squabbles as reported in chapter records of the time.
