Clément Janequin’s bombastic chanson La guerre was a popular source of parody material for Masses throughout the Renaissance era. In Spain, Guerrero and Victoria both composed parodies of this piece and Esquivel would have almost certainly known their settings. Both contain unusual scorings – the original chanson is a4 but Guerrero’s Mass is a5 and a8, whilst Victoria’s is a9. Esquivel follows these examples, scoring his Mass for 6 voices before doubling the size of the choir to an extraordinary 12 voices in the final Agnus Dei.
