A parody of Guerrero’s most famous motet Ave virgo sanctissima. Like its model, Esquivel employs a canon at the unison between the top two voices, varying the distance between entries across the movements. In the final Agnus Dei for 6 voices, the canon is dropped in favour of an ostinato-like pattern sung by Superius I to the words Ave virgo sanctissima (the archaic use of polytextuality and complex canonical writing enjoyed a resurgence in Spain in the early years of the 17th century).
