Esquivel’s 1613 publication contains a complete cycle of 16 Magnificat settings – two on each tone, with the more ambitious odd verse settings designated for first Vespers and the simpler even verse settings for second Vespers. In this setting on the 2nd tone, Esquivel doubles the number of voices from 4 to 8 for the Gloria Patri and writes two canons: a simple canon at the 4th between Altus I and Tenor II whilst Altus II is realised by singing Superius I backwards.
