Unusually for Josquin’s motets, this piece is largely homophonic and though short, its effect is one of great solemnity and beautiful simplicity. It is found in various sources in different permutations, including one of Petrucci’s earliest prints from 1503 and in a manuscript as part of Josquin’s Missa D’ung aultre amer as a substitution for the Benedictus (Prima pars only). Indeed Josquin quotes Ockeghem’s D’ung aultre amer at the start of the Secunda pars, demonstrating how pre-Reformation composers had no qualms about mixing sacred and secular themes.
