This magnificent motet is based on a contemporary devotional song associated with Christmas and various Marian Feasts, such as the Annunciation. The text tells of the mystery of the Incarnation and the unusual texture of two equal Bass voices helps create a mysterious sound world, most evident in the opening phrases (the title translates as “This is no normal scheme of things”). The piece was clearly highly regarded in the 16th century and was the model for parody compositions by, among others, Cipriano de Rore, Lassus and Lusitano.
