This complete setting of Psalm 51 is one of Josquin’s finest motets and uses the opening words as a refrain, repeated in a haunting fashion between each verse. The Quintus only sings these refrains and acts like an ostinato, sinking one tone lower each time it is heard, then rising one tone higher to notes of half the value.
