Polytextuality was common in vocal music of the 15th and early 16th centuries. Very often, sacred and secular texts coexisted in the same piece and some voice parts might even be underlaid with two texts. This setting of Alma redemptoris/Ave Regina is particularly interesting and unusual as it sets texts that would be never be heard simultaneously in a liturgical setting (they both occupy the same place in the liturgy but at different times of year). Musically, it is typical of Josquin’s output with clear examples of “modern” imitative writing between the individual vocal parts.
