A loose parody of Taverner’s O Wilhelme, pastor bone, known today as Christe Jesu, pastor bone. Whilst its model is well-known, the Mass has remained relatively obscure, probably because the only source is lacking its Tenor partbook and the fact that it was known erroneously for many years as the Small Devotion Mass. Like the antiphon, much of the text is set syllabically with alternating sections for high and low voices. The overall effect is a more “modern” sound world than Taverner’s more well-known six-voice masses.
