A parody of Taverner’s antiphon Mater Christi. Although the only source for this Mass is lacking its Tenor, the antiphon does survive intact in the Sadler Partbooks (albeit from the latter half of the 16th century) and so a number of passages can be transcribed almost directly from the antiphon to the Mass. The remaining passages have been reconstructed by the editor. Like its model, much of the text is set syllabically with alternating sections for high and low voices. The overall effect is a more “modern” sound world than Taverner’s more well-known six-voice masses.
