Taverner’s most well-known Mass is arguably the finest example of the genre to be written by an English composer. It is lavishly scored for 6 voices (SATTBarB) and he uses thrilling melodic lines and lively rhythms (particularly evident at the Cum Sancto section). As was customary in England, duets, trios and quartets are balanced against tutti sections, each concluding with an ecstatic climax. Furthermore, the in nomine section from the Benedictus subsequently spawned an entire genre of composition in England as later composers sought to emulate Taverner’s ability to maintain coherent musical arguments over lengthy passages.
