Probably composed in the 1520s, the original text of this forward-looking piece was reworked at least twice. Its first incarnation was as O Wilheme, pastor bone, an antiphon to St William of York as well as a prayer for Cardinal Wolsey, as used at Cardinal College, Oxford (now Christ Church, Oxford, where Taverner was the first Informator Choristorum). Following the Reformation and Wolsey’s fall from favour, it became a Jesus antiphon with a prayer for King Henry VIII. Finally, it became a prayer for Queen Elizabeth I. Taverner also used it as the model for his Missa Sancti Wilhelmi devotio.
