The three “Western Wind” Masses by Sheppard, Taverner and Tye are the only English Masses of the Renaissance era that are based on a secular model – the popular monophonic song “Western wind, when wilt thou blow”. Sheppard’s setting was almost certainly the last of the three to be composed and is also the shortest. It contains some of the composer’s most exciting rhythmic writing, particularly evident in the two Osanna sections.
