Arguably Richafort’s finest work, this Requiem setting was written in memory of Josquin des Prez (d.1521) who may have taught Richafort. Like many 16th century Requiem settings, the chant appears in an embellished form in the polyphony (most often in the highest voice). However, underpinning the work are two cannonical quotations of Josquin. The first is Circumdederunt me, the Cantus Firmus that Josquin quotes in his chanson Nymphes nappés and the second is C’est douleur non pareille, a short falling phrase from Josquin’s chanson Faulte d’argent. The resulting Mass for the dead is one of the most ambitious from the Renaissance era and a worthy memorial to the greatest composer of the first decades of the 16th century.
