Clemens’s most celebrated motet is thought to date from his short period of employment in 1550 with the Illustre Lieve Vrouwe Broederschap in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Their motto was Sicut lilium inter spinas (“As the lily among the thorns”) which he sets here in homophony three times – once for upper voices, once for lower voices and then tutti – breaking the otherwise seamless polyphony to great rhetorical effect.
