A brilliant piece in which Purcell demonstrates his compositional skills in both modern and conservative styles. There are prominent solos for Tenor and Bass as well as long sections of polyphonic writing for choir. It is one of just two Latin motets by Purcell (the other being Beati omnes qui timent Dominum) and may have been written for the Catholic chapel of Catherine of Braganza (wife of Charles II).
