Despite being wrongly attributed to Josquin in the 1564 print, this piece has become one of Gombert’s best known works, setting the words of King David’s lament for his son Absalon. It is in fact a contrafactum of two of his chansons and whilst we do not know exactly who was responsible for combining the text and music, the result is a highly expressive and poignant motet.
