This fine Responsory is built around a penitential ostinato in the Sextus. Each iteration of Miserere mei, Deus, begins one note higher than the previous phrase, before repeating the process in reverse. As a result, it is unusual among Palestrina’s works for 6 voices as it remains wholly contrapuntal in its texture, rather than adopting moments of homophony or antiphonal exchanges between groups of voices.
