The story of the creation of this Mass – one of Palestrina’s finest and most well-known today – has become shrouded in myth. Following complaints by the Council of Trent that polyphony obscured the clarity of the text and was too sensuous, it is said that with this Mass, Palestrina single-handedly saved polyphonic music from being axed from the Church. Whilst we will never know the exact story, what is certain is that Palestrina’s balance of textual clarity vs contrapuntal interest demonstrated that complex polyphony could still be part of Counter-Reformation liturgy. Indeed, when published in 1567, it was described as novo modorum genere (a new form of expression).
