This magnificent Mass from Palestrina’s 2nd Book of Masses is a parody of a motet by Jacquet de Mantua. The piece is characterised by expressive leaps – often with long note values – and there are some sonorous harmonies, but a balance is maintained between clearly declaimed text and spacious polyphony (Palestrina’s famous Missa Papae Marcelli was published in the same collection). Jacquet’s motet uses a text associated with the feast of the Prophets but today this Mass would also work well during Lent.
