This inventive parody of Guerrero’s famous canonical motet Ave virgo sanctissima is Géry de Ghersem’s only known extant composition. The rest of his output was destroyed in the Lisbon earthquake of 1755 but fortunately, this Mass had been published in Madrid in 1598 as the final piece in Philippe Rogier’s Book of Masses. Whilst the model is a 2 in 1 canon at the unison between the top 2 voices, Ghersem writes much of the Mass using a 3 in 1 canon and constantly changes the voices, intervals and distances of the canon. He also adds 2 more voices to Guerrero’s 5-part texture to create a lavish 7-voice Mass (7 being a number often associated with Mary and Marian devotion).
