This intense and expressive motet was published three times in Guerrero’s lifetime; first as part of his Missa Pro defunctis in 1582 and then as a stand alone motet in 1589 and 1597. It is typical of Spanish funereal polyphony and its dark-hued vocal lines look forward to those of later works such as Alonso Lobo’s Versa est in luctum and Victoria’s Requiem.
