This magnificent funeral motet was written to mark the death of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V in 1558. Infantas would have been a young man at the time (c.24 years old) but the preface to his Plura modulationum suggests that the composer met the Emperor in his childhood and this setting is particularly expressive, tinged with a personal sense of grief at the loss of one of Europe’s most powerful rulers.
