Infantas wrote several motets in response to contemporary events and this large work for 7 voices commemorates the siege of Malta by the Ottoman Empire in 1565. The piece is filled with word-painting and symbolism. In bar 7, all the six free voices “gather” on a unison D in response to the text before a Tenor Cantus Firmus enters. It provides a forthright and reassuring contrast with the sometimes frantic melodic writing that surrounds it, singing the words If God be for us, who can be against us? This Cantus Firmus is heard three times, perhaps reinforcing the doctrine of the Holy Trinity.
