Sadly the model for this magnificent Mass is unknown. The opening motif is particularly expressive and demonstrative, featuring a prominent octave leap, and evokes the text of the motet (A voice cries out…) very effectively. In the 2nd Agnus Dei, Lobo employs the seemingly archaic technique of not notating the Cantus II voice. Instead he provides an obscure Latin instruction as to how the part should be realised. In fact, this practice was repopularised on the Iberian peninsula at the beginning of the 17th century and other examples (such as unnotated mensural canons and retrogrades) can be found in the works of Alonso Lobo and Sebastián de Vivanco.
