Duarte Lobo published two Books of Masses during his lifetime and both contained settings of the Missa pro defunctis (Requiem). This eight-voice setting is taken from the 1st Book of 1621 and displays many features typical of Renaissance Requiem settings, most obviously the paraphrase of the chant. Although presented in Double choir format in the source, Lobo very rarely deploys his forces antiphonally and much of the Mass features dense eight-part writing, making it one of the most sonorous Requiem settings of the Renaissance era.
