Duarte Lobo published two Books of Masses during his lifetime and both contained settings of the Missa pro defunctis (Requiem). This six-voice setting is taken from the 2nd Book of 1639 and displays many features typical of Renaissance Requiem settings, most obviously the paraphrase of the chant (often heard in the highest voice here). The unusual scoring of split Altus and Tenor allows for a thicker texture than split Cantus and Tenor (as used by Victoria) and there are only a handful of moments where all 6 voices are not employed all together (such as the Graduale and Offertorium verses). Lobo also includes an alternatim setting of part of the Dies irae sequence and concludes the Mass with a short but incredibly moving Responsory.
